THE smallspace PHOTO LIBRARY
UPDATED July 2003
This is a specialist library that concentrates on areas and subjects that may not necessarily be found in larger picture libraries, nor for that matter easily found on the Internet. Currently the library holds around 10,000 images as prints, 35mm and 5x4 transparencies, or these days, as electronic files.
The library deal with all aspects of space, astronomy and related subjects, including
THE HISTORY OF THE SPACE AGE
Besides some of the more obvious photographs of NASA missions, there are a goodly proportion of the more unusual subject matter, such as Ham, one of the chimpanzees sent into space (left) [c NASA] - and the place where he's buried - The International Space Hall of Fame - Alamorgordo, New Mexico (right).
.SPACE SITES and MUSEUMS
Much useful reference material can be found at the many space museums dotted around the world - especially in the USA.
Space Murals, a private museum in Las Cruses, New Mexico, features a mural that tells the story of the space age on its water tank. Meanwhile Little Joe 1 - the test rocket for the Mercury Project Launch Escape System, is displayed at NASA's Wallops Island Flight Facility, Virginia.
THE SOVIET SPACE INDUSTRY
For many years a mystery, much of the original Soviet Space Industry has recently come to light, such as this design for a Soviet Moonwalk suit for sale at an auction held of Soviet Space Memorabilia. Also seen were this selection of 'desk top' bits and pieces.
PLANETARY MISSIONS
Many images of the planets and moons of the Solar System are included in the Library, plus the spacecraft themselves.
Available are images of the British Mars probe, Beagle 2, (left), and a proposed Russian 'Marsokhod' rover. [c.NASA]
TELESCOPES
Many of the remote sites especially of US telescopes in the Southern States are in the Library, including Kitt Peak - shown here (left) , plus Flagstaff and the Very Large Array.
Also radio telescopes such as one of the largest fully steerable dishes - the Jodrell Bank Mk IA near Manchester (right).
SKIES
There are a number of images of 'the sky' in all forms - such as these - (left) sunrise over Chicago - (right) sunset over Alamorgordo
